The popularity of the Haymarket check has a unique history. The check was originally introduced in the 1920’s as a lining for @Burberry trench coats and was named after the location of the first London store (The Haymarket, in 1891).
A Paris boutique accidently draped a trench coat inside out over a mannequin. This prompted a stream of enquiries about where items in the now iconic check could be purchased. Thomas Burberry responded by developing and making products out of what was initially the lining of his trench coats.
Now, the Haymarket check is a key element of #Burberry’s identity and brand recognition. The infamous pattern is known globally and has contributed significantly to Burberry’s success.
