Brand/Designer Info:

Luxury heritage brand Burberry was founded in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, originally focusing on outdoor attire. Over time Burberry has diversified into apparel, accessories, and handbags. Burberry is known for their long history as well as their attention to quality and luxury at every level of creation and production. The popularity of the Haymarket check has a unique history. The check was originally introduced in 1920’s as a lining for Burberry trench coats and named after the location of the first London store (The Haymarket, in 1891). A Paris boutique accidentally draped a trench coat inside out over a mannequin. This prompted a stream of enquiries about where items in the now iconic check could be purchased. Thomas Burberry responded by developing and making products out of what was initially the lining of his trench coats.

Burberry has led the way in corporate responsibility and sustainability. In 2008 The Burberry Foundation was established for general charitable purposes and grant making. Conscious of the varied social, environmental and economic impacts of the luxury industry on communities worldwide, the Foundation is partnering with expert organisations to promote the STEAM agenda, tackle educational inequality, reduce waste, and support social and economic development. In addition, in 2018 Burberry celebrated diversity and inclusivity with the Rainbow Vintage check and made donations to organisations supporting LGBTQ+ youth around the world.
